Rep. Cook Joins the Congressional Venezuela Democracy Caucus

Nov 13, 2019
Press Release

WASHINGTON – Rep. Paul Cook (R-Apple Valley) announced today that he joined the Congressional Venezuela Democracy Caucus. Throughout the years, the Venezuelan people have enjoyed steadfast, bipartisan support in the U.S. Congress. The Congressional Venezuela Democracy Caucus was created to support freedom and the return of democracy to the Venezuelan people who have endured years of suffering under an authoritarian regime.

According to the United Nations (U.N.), more than 94 percent of people in the Venezuela live in poverty, while more than 4 million Venezuelans have fled the country. The U.N. has also reported that the Maduro regime is committing egregious human rights violations against protestors and pro-democracy activists, including torture, disappearances, and politically-motivated killings. Furthermore, the brutal regimes of Cuba, Russia, Iran, and China remain present in the country, adding fuel to Venezuela’s crisis at the expense of its people and threatening U.S. national security.

Rep. Cook said, “The United States must stand strong against human rights abuses, authoritarianism, and severe deprivation. I’m proud to join the bipartisan Congressional Venezuela Democracy Caucus and support its goals. My colleagues and I will work together to advocate policies that address the severe political and humanitarian crisis and promote freedom for the Venezuelan people.”

A member of the House Natural Resources and Armed Services Committees, Cook served as an infantry officer and retired after 26 years as a Colonel in the U.S. Marine Corps. During his time in combat, he was awarded the Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts.
