Rep. Paul Cook Announces Early Childhood Education Grant for High Desert

Jul 9, 2014
Press Release

WASHINGTON – Today, Rep. Paul Cook (R – Apple Valley) announced that San Bernardino County will receive a $42 million federal grant to benefit childhood and early childhood education programs.

There are currently 11 Head Start and Early Head Start programs across the High Desert. Located in Hesperia, Adelanto, Apple Valley, and Victorville, these facilities enroll roughly 6,000 children. This grant restores $2.1 million in funds lost during sequestration and supports staff members, facilities, school supplies, meals, immunization and dental, hearing and mental health services for students.

Cook said, “As an educator, I understand the importance of ensuring that children receive a quality education starting at a young age. This funding is a long term investment in our children’s future and I’m glad to see this money going to San Bernardino County students.”

A member of the House Foreign Affairs, Armed Services, and Veterans’ Affairs Committees, Cook served as an infantry officer and retired after 26 years as a Colonel in the U.S. Marine Corps. During his time in combat, he was awarded the Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts.
